Universal Pictures says studio executives have tabbed U.S. actor Taylor Lautner of the “Twilight” Saga film to star in the film “Stretch Armstrong.”
The film studio said in a release Friday that Lautner, 17, will play the 3-D film’s title character based on a Hasbro toy brand. The studio also confirmed it moved the release date for the film “Battleship,” also based on a Hasbro toy.
“Armstrong” is currently tabbed for release in 2012, while “Battleship” is now scheduled for release on May 25, 2012.
“Battleship” was directed and produced by Peter Berg, known for films such as “The Kingdom” and “Hancock.” The film was slated for release in July 2011.
Universal Pictures Co-Chairman Donna Langley said the addition of Lautner to “Armstrong” is an ideal fit for the superhero film.
“In the past two years, Taylor has emerged as a real star at the global box office. He brings the perfect balance of energy and athleticism to the role of an unlikely super hero with a fantastic super power,” Langley offered. “We couldn’t be more pleased that he has agreed to be our Stretch.”
